ALL ABOUT TRP
What is TRP?
TRP stands for Television Rating Points. You may assume that it is the primary factor which decides if the show will continue to run on television. It is also the key element in determining how good a show is.
Why do we need TRP?
Imagine you are a TV producer and are producing a show. Its expenses are in millions. How will you get money to make the show? There are 2 ways: payments made to the channel and app its being broadcasted in (premium) and the second is advertising. Payments made to the channel are typically less. Most of the money goes into satellite uplinking and downlinking and premium fees of apps goes into maintenance of the app. For a show to make money, we need ADVERTISERS. These advertisers advertise their brands on television and in return give money. This money is then utilised to handle the production costs of the show.
However, this doesn't mean an advertiser will promote their ads randomly on any show. Naturally, ads will only be placed on shows that are popular in the country. This is probably why the system of TRP comes into the picture.
Here, TRP is basically calculated to know how many people are watching which show and why they are watching it. It can also be used to know what target audience is your ad suitable.
'TRP stunts' are not typically wrong, because at the end the show producer needs money to get show. This industry too is a business, and not a social service industry. If you can find the best way to impress your boss, so can the show makers to impress the audience!
HOW IS TRP CALCULATED?
TRP is not calculated in everyone's house. BARC India has been assigned the work to calculate show TRPs. This authority selects a few samples (that's around 44,000 households in India ONLY) and attaches BAROMETERS alternatively called TRP meters into houses. Remember, ONLY THESE MANY HOUSES have TRP calculation. So yes, NOT ALL VIEWERS contribute to TRP. Its only these many houses. If you think you're contributing to TRP too, its a big NO.
Now comes the second part, Online TRP. Well, OTT is the present, and the future. Cable TVs and DTHs were a thing of the past. Every TV channel has been uploading there shows on their own OTT platforms. The TRP for OTT shows is called Online TRP. Its benefit is everyone can contribute to online TRP and also watch it whenever they want.
Here, ONLINE TRP IS ONLY CALCULATED ON THE VIEWS ON OFFICIAL APPS. Sony TV and Sony SAB are owned by Sony Pictures Networks India and so, their official app is SonyLIV. Remember, NO OTHER app other than SonyLIV will count as Online TRP.
Zee Entertainment Enterprises owns Zee TV and And TV so only ZEE5 is counted. Star India owns Star Plus and Star Bharat so only shows from Disney+ Hotstar are counted. Similarly, Colors (Viacom 18) has Voot.
Hence, if you are a real fan of any of these shows, watch your shows on their official apps, and not as pirated copies on YouTube or on other apps.
Why does Maddam Sir have a low TRP?
IF the show is actually that good, (Checkout our review for the best show on Indian Television right now, Maddam Sir) has the channel done justice with the show?
The clear answer is NO.
Since it was a replacement for the dying show 'Jijaji Chhat Par Hai' in 2020, it was given the time slot of 10.00 PM. Competing is the Star Plus show Anupamaa, which gets a TRP of almost 4. It became popular because of the channel, and now it has an established base. On the other hand, Sony SAB is less popular and viewed.
The channel, still brought back JCPH with a second season titled Jijaji Chhat Parr Koii Hai and moved Maddam Sir to 10.30 PM. There is absolutely no TRP expectation from this timeslot.
The channel has never promoted the show properly, not given a good time slot, and not given anything to it. Its quite sad and shameful for this channel to treat a show like this. Even the SonyLIV app has pushed Maddam Sir to the last. How can one expect Online or Offline TRP.
Maddam Sir deserves a proper prime time slot. Either an 8PM timeslot (currently alloted to a unrealistic Sci-Fi show) or 9.30 PM timeslot.
Every person including cast/crew of every show works hard, which is why no show can be called bad, but still, its disappointing that the same channel, Sony SAB promotes its other show, Kaatelal and Sons more. Kaatelal and Sons is not a great show, its cast is fine but it has deviated from the purpose, it started as a feminism show but unfortunately it now shows two girls getting disguised as boys and their drama.
What do you think? Is Maddam sir deserving? Should it be pushed by the channel like Kaatelal and Sons? Do you also think the channel is not good at making decisions?
